It is equal to 100,000 British thermal units and is approximately the amount of energy released by burning 100 cubic feet (often referred to as 1 CCF) of natural gas. The therm is 1.055 × 10<sup>8</sup> joules. Historically, the therm was the statutory unit of gas supplied in the UK.
